Competition Entry
Warming Huts V2016
Team: Trey Hoffmann and John Knuteson

This entry for the Warming Huts V2016 Competition playfully responds to the prompt for the design of a temporary shelter.  The key design feature is an operable pivoting partition, which results in dynamic relationships, both of the shelter to its transient site and of the spaces within the shelter itself. Made of semi-transparent material, the partition alludes to the space beyond it and invites the visitor to use it to explore different configurations of space.  In the closed position, the partition acts as a naturally insulative barrier.  On the interior, a reflective ceiling places the visitor within the site while effectively trapping heat and reflecting light within the space.  The simplicity and spontaneity of the exterior slat walls provides a physical weather barrier and yields different natural lighting conditions throughout the day.  Working from two different cities, the team established a design process using small, informal study models.
