Rain Folly is an investigation of site and sensation. The project seeks to amplify natural and uncontrolled qualities of site through sensory phenomena. Embedded in a public site, Discovery Park, Seattle, WA, the construct must first be encountered, and subsequently invites engagement, inhabitation, and contemplation. Inverting the usual perception of enclosure, the construct is designed to appear as a sheltering edifice, yet through the use of an oculus, allows preciptation to enter its space. Suspended within the volume on a grated floor, the visitor first experiences the usual tactile quality of rain through the steady trickle of water through the oculus. Acoustic phenomena enter the perception of the space through the use of a hollow metal roof, as well as visual entasis supplied by the angled walls, producing a forced perspective as the visitor looks up toward the oculus.
